Sardine Run Adventure
Follow shifting bait balls and the predators that gather around them.
Each autumn off Bahía Magdalena, enormous sardine schools gather and attract many predators. Marlins, sharks, whales, dolphins, sea lions and seabirds converge on the same food source, creating one of the Pacific coast’s most dynamic natural spectacles.
Aboard a panga, we search for signs of the schools: birds diving at the surface, dolphin movements, splashes or unusual activity on the horizon. When we find a bait ball, we watch the hunting strategies unfolding around it.
Depending on the encounters, the animals’ behavior and conditions, it may be possible to enter the water and see the action beneath the surface, especially when marlins are hunting around the sardines. Orcas, humpback whales and other Pacific visitors may cross our path, but sightings can never be promised.
